The Office “Murder”S6 E10

The song, "The Gold", is composed by Ennio Morricone from the soundtrack “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. However, I arranged the music's tempo to fit the pacing of The Office, added extra musical elements as well as sound FX to give the scene a little bit more ridiculousness. Composing this piece was an ear training exercise to learn Western Style music, and learn from of the great soundtracks: “The Good The Bad and The Ugly.”

The Office is one of the few TV shows that doesn't have music in it. While I love orchestrating music, the comedic value of this episode truly comes from the music's silence, and dry humor. I hope you enjoy this creative adaption!

Battlefield I Music Trailer

I had a blast writing this piece, and learned how to whistle too—well sort of….

The pacing of this trailer is a march to battle with all the chaotic noises, explosions, and battle cries that comes with war.

The snare rolls have musical motifs of executions that are reminiscent of Chopin’s Sonata No. 2 in B Flat Minor “Funeral March”. While the whistles are inspired by the Military march, “It’s a Long Way To Tipperary” which would have been sung by the British during WWI. The Violin and Chello echo the melody in a sad, nostalgic way—a soldiers longing to be somewhere else. The tuba and timpani drums (very Han Zimmerman because they are played way to low to actually be played in an orchestra) help narrate the deafening explosions that soldiers would hear on the Battlefield—BOOM, PSHHHH. Last but not least, the whistles are recorded live—with many, many takes.

I myself am not an experienced whistler. I even bought a sample whistle pack, but it just didn’t “sound” accurate. Ironically I realized, if I recorded my whistles enough times I could make it sound like an entire platoon even if I was off key. Not everybody who enlisted in the army could whistle in key therefore my whistles did not have to be perfect—or in key.

See if you can hear the French Horn’s military call to battle?

Or the Trumpets mirroring the siren sounds as the planes come crashing down—BOOM!

Barnes Firm Jingle 2018

My friend and fellow singer/songwriter Shannon Larsen joint forces to create this jingle for the Barnes Firm jingle contest. We had a blast writing it, and I thought it came out great. Take a listen and let me know what you think! Does your company need a jingle?

Bird Story 2018

I teamed up with the creator of T-Pickled--an apparel company based out of the Bay Area--to create a multi-sensory project: music that you can wear. If interested in purchasing a piece of clothing please visit T-Pickled here

Ever look up into the night sky and feel like you've landed halfway into a dream? This project is dedicated to those late night wonderings sprung to life by your subconscious. We reference the Moon card from tarot, which resembles the fear from past experiences being projected onto your present and future. It references the zodiac as one of your many tools to expose this fear and surface the unconscious. May this project be a reminder to keep your Jungian 'shadow' self illuminated by the moonlight and never let being conscious escape you. Good luck!

Gold Out West 2017

Christian Flaten had some drone footage that needed music. His drone kissed the San Francisco skylines, and even captured a magical sunrises between the new Sales Force towers. I really wanted to mirror the drone’s use of space while creating this track: it floats effortlessly over the skyline, and gives a prospective that the average person doesn’t see in their regular 9-5 job.

Reverb is a powerful tool because it gives the listener a sense of “acoustic-three- demential-space.” If you don’t use reverb it’s the same as whispering to someone—more intimate; however, if you use a lot it give it gives a great ethereal and magical sound. Take a listen, and notice the juxtaposition between the verses and choruses. Enjoy!

#HitDaClock!: The Alarm Clock Series

The alarm clock series is about creating personalized alarm clocks catered to waking you up in a beautiful state. Some people are light sleepers, some are heavier sleepers, some use alarms, some throw their alarms, and some don't even use an alarm. Individualized alarm clocks have the power to help your roll out of bed on the "right" side based on your musical preferences. Not all alarm clocks should be alarming however they should remind us on how to seize the day, and make the most out of it. Day after day people listen to the same alarm clock. Let's make the most of your morning by creating an alarmed clock that reminds you how awesome you truly are--day after day!

The Rules

  • 2 weeks or less to write a 90 second alarm clock piece.

  1. What's the type of emotion you would want to feel in the morning

  2. On a scale of 1-10 how annoying/alarming would you want the alarm clock to be?

  3. What type of genre/musical artist, or style do you prefer?

  4. What's three adjectives/favorite lines that describe you?

  5. Tell me a little bit about your morning right when you wake up.
